Bed looks 'Tuckered Out'

By: Anonymous - Ottawa, Canada Jul 24, 2010

I would agree with some of the other reviews in that we were very excited about this bed when it arrived; now - not so much. When it first came out of the box, it was fluffy, puffy and downright comfy. It has now been in use for nearly 1 year and so it would seem, a good time to offer up our review. Our dog is a super calm and gentle Standard Poodle (short clip) who never scratches or bites his bed. When he finds the right place, he settles down. With this bed, he simply finds the berber too warm for sleeping (even in winter). Consequently, he opts for half the night on the cool hardwood floor (ouch) before eventually making his way back to the relative comfort of his Tuckered Out bed by morning. Even with this limited use, the bed looks like an old relic. The berber surface is flat and matted, the filling is thin and lumpy, and the bed just won't stay in the bolster position, no matter how tightly I pull the cords. The liner that holds the filling is very thin and nearly self-destructs with even the slightest of handling when removing the cover for laundering. I will add, however, that the removable cover is a great feature that I would insist upon. In summary, a cooler fabric with more loft would have our dog sleeping better, while improved value and wearability would undoubtedly have us sleeping better. I suspect come winter, this bed will find its way into our van to live out its anticipated short life for travel around town. Sadly, we would not recommend this product.

Old Dogs' Dream Bed

By: Petra - Colorado Jul 22, 2010

Our 14 year old Rottweiler & Colli mix really enjoys this very well made dog bed. He is a big boy and the filling conforms to his shape with ease. Contrary to other claims we have had no issues with the filling wearing out - just shake out the bed once or twice a week and it works like new.

We already own two other West Paw Design dog beds, the organic Bumper Bed for our Border Collie (he had knee surgery and likes the softness of the bed) and one Eco Nap for lazing about. The only time our dogs leave the comfort of the beds is for meals, walks and playtime.

It is good to know these beds are Made in the USA - the large retailers carry mostly cheap Chinese junk made of polyester that no self respecting human would wear on their bodies.

The quality justifies every penny of the asking price - durable, easy to clean and care for. A good product made right - and made here in the US.

Not long lasting

By: C - Laramie, WY Mar 31, 2010

This bed was great at first. However, I would agree with other reviewers that the inner filling falls apart very quickly. The outer berber cover is holding up well, however. The filling is very flat where my dog sleeps the most, and I can no longer "fluff" it up. I would expect the filling to be a bit more sturdy, since it is being used for a dog. My dog tries her hardest to move the filling around where she sleeps as well. I would not recommend purchasing this bed, unless you have a very small dog who does not really "use" their bed.

Easy to destroy

By: Steph B - Mar 24, 2010

I was so excited about this bed. I thought it would see my pup through his young years to his old ones, but he has destroyed it. Even when "tuckered out" from lots of exercise, he still found energy to rip up his bed. He was able to open the zipper and shred the bed within the cover. Unfortunately, I could not trust him to be alone with this expensive purchase.

Overall, I think this bed is great, but I would think twice about getting it for a puppy until you are sure the puppy is old enough not to destroy it.

Zipper damage after 3 weeks

By: Gail - Austin Mar 22, 2010

Loved this bed but just after three weeks my dog was able to pull down the zipper enough that some of the stitching tore apart. Zipper won't go back up the extra inch. Don't know if I will be able to sew it back together. Very disappointed.

Don't judge a book by it's cover!

By: Peggy - Philadelphia, PA Jan 10, 2010

Initially I would have given this bed a 5. Both my dog and I loved it! After 3 months of use the polyfill did condense in the spots my 40 lb. dog liked to sleep in on a regular basis. I grabbed the bed and fluffed it up which worked well, I thought, until I removed the beautiful, sturdy berber cover. The inner liner had big tears in about seven different places. It is tissue thin and tears very easily. I'm so disappointed! Why use such an inferior fabric to manufacture a liner for such an expensive and potentially wonderful dog bed?

Possibly the Perfect Bed

By: Jaclyn Clark, LVT - Huntsville, AL Nov 28, 2009

Love, love, love this bed! I work in veterinary medicine & have seen all sorts of dog beds over the years. This one is by far my favorite. Although expensive, they are beautiful & completely machine washable. I purchased 2 mediums for my 2 mixed breeds weighing 30-45# & my friend purchased 2 mediums for her dachshunds. My 45#'r could've gone up to a large but is still really comfortable. The beds don't look quite as big as you would think from the dimensions because of the curved bolster construction. My dogs loved them right away & lie on them all the time. Very good for dogs who like to "snuggle in" to their bed. Thanks West Paw!

A very satisfied repeat customer

By: Anonymous - Denver CO Nov 25, 2009

This is my third Tuckered Out bed. The first one I bought because it fit the space. The second was for a senior dog; and the latest one is for my new rescue dog who needs a quick exit. The bed have worn very well;--the old one is in the basement for the cats. And the service from West Paw Designs has always been perfect. Thank you very much.

a surprise hit on the first night

By: poochie's family - Oct 17, 2009

I was hesitant about purchasing this bed only because I have purchased other beds in the past and Poochie didn't quite take to them. Poochie is a "big" yorkshire terrier about 12 pounds and I noticed that he was having some difficulty going up steps and getting on top of our bed. We purchased one of those gelpedic beds for dogs with the low surround -- he rarely uses it (i use it more than him actually, it's quite comfortable to sit on...;-). I found West Paw Design's Tuckered Out bed to be something that could be right for the Poochman - easy to get in to, warm and comfy. I received the bed today and did a human test run and sat in it myself - very comfy and surprsingly firm. I thought it would be too soft or mushy, but the Tuckered Out bed has pretty good support (must be those plastic bottles). Poochie didn't take to it at first so I had to coax him into it a little. As soon as he sat down it in, and I kid you not, he stayed in that bed for a good two hour nap. As I write this, it's bedtime and he's back in the Tuckered Out bed apparently having some sweet dreams. Lucky rascal.
Will send some pics soon of Mr. Pooch having a snooz on the Tuckered Out bed soon. BTW, Poochie is a "big" yorkshire terrier. About 12 pounds. We ordered the Medium-sized Tuckered Out bed and he has plenty of space to curl up or stretch out as he pleases. Nice Blue color, too. West Paw Design: you done good.

Lab Loves!!

By: Kristin - Philadelphia Apr 28, 2009

I ordered this bed for my 9 month 90 pound lab and he loves it! I ordered an XL, yet worried that it may be too small, but I was so wrong. The XL is huge!! He loves the bumper on all three sides! Thanks so much for great products!

The Best Dog Bed EVER!

By: Melinda - Bozeman, MT Dec 17, 2008

We knew we found a great dog bed, when our basset hound jumped down off the couch to go lie on his new bed.
We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a soft, cozy, eco-friendly dog bed. Our basset hound loves the bolster pillow. The size that we got (L) fits nicely into his dog crate, an added bonus. Thanks West Paw for making such great products, right here in the USA!

Magic Bed

By: Amy - Chicago Nov 18, 2008

We purchased this bed yesterday for our eight-year-old (?) border collie mix who has some pretty severe hip dysplasia. He's newly adopted and we wanted to find something extremely comfortable for his new home. If the first night is any indication, we've found the perfect bed. He climbed onto it as soon as we got it home and slept for 14-15 hours.

Finally a dog bed for my dogs and my conscience

By: Sian - Los Angeles Nov 14, 2008

My husband and I purchased this dog bed for our little frenchie who had out grown her puppy bed. She loves the groove that she can snuggle right into when she's ready for bedtime. We love it so much we are ordering a bigger one for our lab--who we find sneaking naps in it all the time!

Love it!

By: Cindy - NC Oct 10, 2008

My 10-year-old golden retriever LOVES this bed. She has never cared for laying on dog beds, but she stretches out in this one all the time. I find her also snuggling in the bumper and using it for support.

Fell Apart

By: - OH Sep 05, 2008

Initially I was thrilled, it is beautiful fleece and very plush. I was a little shocked at the price (I purchased the XL for my Old English Sheepdog pup) but the bed was so soft I thought it was worth it. Unfortunately it fell apart after washing. The inner pillow is very poorly constructed, and the fabric ripped handwashing it in the bathtub. It doesn't have a waterproof cover, so you have to wash the entire bed and inner pillow if your puppy 'pees'. A waste of over $200 with tax and shipping.

Cats loveTuckered Out beds too!

By: Julie Whitman - Sterling, VA Aug 17, 2008

Our cats give a 5 claws up for your Tuckered Out beds! As soon as we received them in the mail and placed them around the house, the cats immediately gravitated to the beds and started snoozing. The two big boys, Sammy and Julian, are 18 pounds each and they each fit comfortably in their own large Tuckered Out beds. And, if someone has an accident, these beds are super easy to clean in the washer, reassemble, they keep their shape, and the material lasts year after year. Your Tuckered Out beds are the cat's meow at our house! Thank you :)

Best Dog Bed I've Purchased

By: Ann Boyd - Portland, OR Jan 26, 2008

On an average day my husband and I have three pugs running around in our household; our two and a foster. I purchased this bed specifically for our nine year old rescue who has a difficult time getting around because of her severe luxating patellas. Just as I thought, having a bolster like shape allows her to easily get in and out of her bed. Little did we know, the new bed would take presedence over our laps. I guess this means we're going to get one for each room. Thanks for making such a great bed and we appreciate them being eco friendly too!

Puppy just snuggles right in

By: Michael - Toronto Nov 15, 2007

This is a great dog bed. I bought the small size and it fits my 8mth old Yorkie puppy perfectly.

When I looked at the bed in the store, I was hesitant because it didn't look like there was an indentation for my puppy to sleep in. Then the store put the cushion on sale, so I was willing to take a chance. I made the right choice. West Paw has cleverly designed the interior cushion so that it hollows out in the middle. My puppy likes it so much I have trouble coaxing him out of it in the morning.

There is no question that the material is higher quality. I bought a bumper bed made in China for almost the same price. The plush fabric had loose tufts still in it and smelled of chemicals. I had to wash it before I felt comfortable using it. In contrast, the West Paws plush fabric had no lose tufts and no smell when I bought it. I felt comfortable using it right from the store.

Ms.

By: Bethany - Toronto Oct 22, 2007

The very best bed anywhere for my dog ! Tried several different ( and expensive ) kinds.
She fell in love with this Tuckered Out. She is only 5 pounds, not very much hair, and young - bed is not just for older dogs!

It's warm, dog can snuggle in any way - the bed forms to the dogs' position. She digs like crazy - the material has held up incredibly to the abuse. It is a great compromise between a donut shape and a flat pad.

AND, it's easy to get into ( great for tiny dog legs ).

We are looking forward to more color options becoming available
in the future ( hopefully ).

Plumb Tuckered out is Right

By: donald park - May 26, 2007

I had to write and tell you the great success of purchasing this bed, and the only downfall I may have with it.
We Purchased this bed for our little buddy Gizmo, he is getting up there in age, and takes about fifteen or so lurks to even be able to jump into our laps anymore. His old joints hurt alot more now days.
Well on with the results of our purchase, We purchased the tuckered out bed for Gismo, and he loves it, everytime we look and the bed is filled with either Gizmo or the Cat Gabby cat, which leads me to the downfall, there are times Gizmo wants to lay in his bed but cant due to the cat sleeping in it, Looks as though I am gonna have to puchase another one for the cat, so they quit arguing like children on who is gonna sleep in the bed. Also do you make them in human size, they are Great.

Need to clean your dog bed?  No problem - these beds were designed to be washed again and again.  You can wash the entire bed, cover and inner-pillows:

For quick washes (covers only):

  • Machine Wash on COLD/COLD.
  • Machine Dry on LOW heat.
For deeper cleanings, you may wash the entire bed.  Since every washer and dryer are different, we recommend different strategies to different people. If you have a machine that is known to be tough on clothing (catching or tearing fabric), then we suggest you leave the insert pillow in its cover during the wash. However, if your washer machine is a front loading machine with a gentle history, then you may separate the pillow insert from the cover, inspect inserts, and wash all parts:
  • Machine Wash on COLD/COLD using GENTLE cycle.
  • Machine Dry on LOW heat. (See extra note below)
Important Notes:
  1. If there is a tear in the white covering, or if an area of weakness is noticed, be sure to have these areas fixed or replaced before washing. If a damaged pillow is washed, the IntelliLoft® fill could clog drains (not to mention is no fun to clean up).
  2. When drying our larger size beds, be sure that the bed is freely tumbling.  If one area of the bed is pushed against the heating element and does not rotate, the heat could damage the fabric.
  3. Be sure to "zip close" any zippers. This helps protect the zipper during the wash and gives it a longer life.
