We rarely review products, but had to make an exception this time. Our dog is a 30 pound, quintessential mutt. He loves to chew. If he were to be paid to chew, we'd be millionaires. As with every other West Paw dog toy, the build quality is extremely high. Although it seems many customers buy these toys for aggressive chewers (like we do!), any dog would love the combination of toughness, buoyancy, bounciness, and size.
The Hurley is no exception. Classic bone shape, fun colors, tougher than any toy we've found on the market, easy to clean...I could go on as many happy customers will attest.
Best of all, West Paw offers a replacement if/when your dog destroys the toy. Other reviewers insist that their dog manages to chew straight through this toy in a few days. This would probably be true of our dog, however, we have created a system of toy rotation, for two reasons. First, we obviously want to try to make certain toys last longer than others. Second, using a system where your dog doesn't have constant access to all of his or her toys creates a reward system for good behavior. This is a smart technique when the owner is trying to discontinue the use of food treats as rewards for good behavior or obedience. Sometimes our dog wont see his Hurley for days and when he finally sees us removing it from the cupboard after outstanding behavior, he goes nuts and is content for hours.
All that to say, we don't let our pup have constant access to his Hurley. Because of this, our Hurley's generally last about 4-8 weeks. Some may say this isn't a very long time. For owners with aggressive chewers, this is an eternity. We never feel the need to take advantage of WestPaw's return/exchange program because we're completely happy with the products. We happily replace the bones when it's time. In a world where no product seems to last as long as consumers want it to, West Paw products are on the longer end of the spectrum in this family. If we found a toy that vastly outlasted WestPaw's, we'd reconsider. However as of yet, no toy comes close to these standards.
Lastly, how many toy companies make their products in the USA? Are environmentally friendly? Few fit this bill. After we mistakenly fed our dog treats that were misleadingly manufactured in China -- which resulted in months of incontinence, vet bills, and permanent digestive problems -- we vowed to stick to products where we knew their origin. No surprise, West Paw exceeds this standard with a highly transparent supply chain and manufacturing process.
We couldn't be happier with West Paw products and they will always be a staple in our dog toy collection. Would highly recommend to any dog owner, but especially for aggressive chewers. Just remember, rotate toys and they will last much longer!
