We're changing our barcodes to color!

On August 15th, 2011 all of our products will ship with a new barcodes.  We have heard your feedback and we're happy to begin shipping new UPC codes which will identify the product and its color. This improvement will allow you to better track inventories as well as sales by color.  When it comes time to place an order with West Paw Design, your system will not only know how many toys you need to re-stock, but which colors you need to order.

Why is West Paw Design moving to Barcode By Color?

The move to barcode by color is an improvement that will allow our customers to better track inventories. In addition to tracking in-stock quantities of a particular item, barcode by color provides an extra level of detail so that you can also track quantities by color. As an example, barcode by color will enable you to know that there are 9 Hurley dog toys in stock: 6 Tangerine, 1 Aqua and 2 Granny Smith Green.

When I update my barcode list, what about the product I have on the shelf with the old barcodes?

No worries!! We’ve created all-new barcodes, so there should be no confusion between what is on the shelf and what is new. Simply add the new UPC codes to your system and do not delete the old UPC codes (not yet, anyway). After you’ve sold out of the product in your store with the non-color UPC code, you can delete them from your system... or leave them and let them go dormant.

When will I begin receiving product with the new barcodes?

All product shipping on or after August 15th, 2011 will have the new barcode-by-color UPC codes on the packaging.

What’s the difference between a “Barcode” and a “SKU”?

diagram of our barcode, highlighting where the SKU is, the UPC number, etcA UPC (Universal Product Code) barcode is a pattern of thick and thin lines and spaces that can be quickly scanned by a computer right-side-up or upside- down and results in the same number identifying a unique product. A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a unique identifier for each distinct product that is made up of a combination of letters and numbers to help it be “human readable.”

Will the product SKUs be changing?

Yes. The product SKUs will be very similar to our previous product code SKUs, but some may now have an extra zero or two and all will now have a color abbreviations added to them. Most SKUs will be 8 characters long. The first 5 characters will represent the product code combined with a 3 character color abbreviation. A few of our beds will have a SKU with 11 characters, since they will have two color abbreviations combined on the end of the product code. As an example, the new SKU for a large aqua Hurley will be “ZG011AQA” and the new SKU for a small Bumper Bed with chocolate center pillow and chocolate outside bolster will be “K0916CHOCHO” Where can I get the new list of UPC codes? You can easily download an Excel file with all of our UPC codes from our Dealer-Direct page in the “Documents Center” section. It contains all the UPC numbers and our new SKUs too.

What do I need to do?

This answer will most likely be different depending upon how your store is currently using the barcode on our packaging. For most store owners, you will want to import all of the new UPC codes into your Point Of Sales (POS) system, just as you would when we launch a new product. Every new product that you purchase from us after August 15th, will appear as a “new” product to your system. Of course, if you do not currently use our barcode on the packaging, then this will not affect you (although, now might be a great time to begin using it).

Will this change how I place orders?

If you create or place orders through your POS system, you may need to add the new UPC codes to your system before you place orders shipping on or after August 15th, 2011. However, if you are ordering via our order form or from our website the process will be exactly the same as before.
