Catnip Toys: Washing Dos and Don’ts

Posted May 11, 2009

After tons of play, don’t throw it away! Catnip toys can be washed, and still keep their frisky appeal

You love to watch your cat play with his new catnip toys, but what do you do when those toys have been scratched and bitten and dragged around the house more times than you can count? Don’t be so fast to the trash! Your catnip toys can be washed in the washing machine and come back almost as good as new!

The catnip itself can stand a few turns in the washing machine without losing its potency, as long as you wash with cool or warm water and let the toy air dry. When it’s dry, simply scrunch the toy a little bit to reactive the herbal oils, and watch your cat tear after it like new! When you’ve washed it a few times, the catnip will eventually lose its appeal, but the toy itself will be just as tough as ever. Simply sprinkle some of our packaged catnip on the outside of the toy and rub it in a little for hours of fun!

There are only a few words of caution when machine washing your West Paw Design catnip toys, as some of our products have elements that will not survive washing as well as others. Catnip toys such as the Catnip Pouch, and our collection of certified organic Catnip Cat Toys will withstand machine washing with no problem. Some of our other catnip toys can be washed without any major problems, but some of the glued-on features, such as eyes and noses, will eventually come loose. The toy itself, however, will maintain all of its original appeal.

There are only a handful of West Paw Design catnip toys that we do NOT recommend machine washing, as their construction and material hold up better to spot cleaning. These particular catnip toys that hold up better with spot cleaning: the ever popular Hair BallDazzle, and the interactive cat toy; Kitty Lure. They can still take anything your cat dishes out, but simply do not like to get soaking wet! The bottom line is that West Paw Design manufactures its catnip toys for the long haul. Just because your cat’s toy gets a bit messy doesn’t mean its life is over! Keep your kitty happy – give him his favorite toy over and over again!
