Years of refluffing
June 23, 2015
I love West Paw Designs. I do. And our pup's do as well. And I love the bumper bed but must be honest to anyone thinking of purchasing: You're going to need an extra pad. I've had two bumper beds for our pup's for about 5 years. Within a week the center pad was flat. We refluffed and refluffed until we got tired of it and finally just bought and extra filling pillow. That seems to have done the trick. The bolster side also gets lumpy and limp so we replaced it with the bolster pad for the same bed but a size bigger. That way when it gets stuffed into the smaller bolster bed you have to shove it and it offers more support. So for the medium bed we purchased a large bolster and shoved it in. Large we bought an extra large. What I love about these beds is that they actually come apart for washing but that's about it. We're saying goodbye to our senior beagle soon. He's not winning our war on cancer, unfortunately. So I was thinking of replacing our other pup's bed. I was hoping the cost of these beds would have come down or quality maybe better but based I n other reviews, it is the same as a few years ago.
Bottom line: pretty. Durable. The only one I've found that comes apart to clean.
Goes flat within a week. Have to buy extra padding. And after I washed ours the first time the colors DID fade. A lot.
Great doggy bed!

Great doggy bed. It is stylish, comfortable and soft. I have washed it a few times and it is in great condition still. My Boston Terrier, Max is rough with his beds and this one has held up fine. I would recommend this bed for any dog.
Gets my dogs approval!

My Golden loves this bed. So does my Airedale mix. In fact my mix loves it so much that she stole it from the Golden and I had to order another one. This time I ordered the XXL for the Golden since he's 90+ lbs and the XL was a bit snug for him. Last night my husband and I witnessed them actually racing each other to the bedroom to see who would get the bed first. Hopefully in a couple of days they will both have one and it wont be a problem :)
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I have to fluff it a lot (after having it 1 week) and for the price I shouldn't have to do that.
Bumper Beds for our Trio of Big Mutts

We have 6 of these beds. 3 large, 1 XL and 2 XXL. First off, the two times that I have had zipper and fabric issues the customer service was quick and responsive, sending out replacements. Second, the inserts are made from recycled bottles and don't harbor bugs like conventional foam and they don't 'offgas' at all. Big plus in my book with 3 large dogs that spend a fair amount of time in the woods and in the water. The inserts dry quickly outside when you have to wash them, which is not very often. The covers are a piece of cake to wash and dry and we throw ours in the dryer weekly without heat just to clean off some of the hair. Yes, the inserts go flat. When you order the bed, order an extra insert one or two sizes down and once the bed gets flat enough, add it in, or add old towels. Seriously not a big deal. The covers last years. Some of ours are going on 6 years now. We have never had a bed last that long. We replace the inserts about every two years. The heavy duty toys are very well made and make excellent gifts for friends getting new dogs.
Goes flat fast, customer service is helpless

I gave West Paw not one but two chances. First, I bought the Bumper bed. The zipper broke in a week, and the bed went totally flat under 40lbs of my Olde English Bulldog puppy. I got a replacement from Kriser's which, unfortunately, also went flat after two weeks. Few weeks ago, I ordered the Pillow bed. My dog prefers to sleep on the floor. The thing has absolutely no support. And the worst part, after emailing customer service, they mentioned that they will 'forward my comments to R&D team'. Absolutely no restitution or care that I just dropped $300 on something that compares in quality to a $20 bed from Target.
According to my dogs, this is

According to my dogs, this is quite possibly the best bed ever. They spend the vast majority of their time in it, choosing it over their leather armchair, their raised PVC bed, and quite often even their much-adored crate. They love snuggling against the bumper, as well as hiding stashes of their favorite toys between it and the pillow.
According to me... I like the construction of the covers. I had previously made my own beds because it was so difficult to find one that was made of durable material, and easy to take apart and clean. I'm not quite crafty enough to create a bumper, though, so I went ahead and bought this.
My biggest concern is the flattening of the inner pillow. We're only a few months in, and already it's less than half as fluffy as when it was new. Still thick enough to offer cushion against the floor, and it isn't lumpy yet, but other reviews have me worried it's just a matter of time. I won't be buying replacement parts - I'll restuff it with materials from my old beds if need be. I agree with others - for the price, this should not be an issue.

We purchased this bed in August of 2012 and we've been very happy with the quality and the construction. Our 8 year old, 95 lb golden, Hank, loves the bed. Hank was never much of a bed lover, always happy to sleep on the floor, but we find him in his bed all the time! The covers come off easily for washing and it cleans up really nicely. I've just ordered two more beds from this company, one for traveling and to use in the kitchen, and another bumper bed for my little grand dog. It's awesome to have an opportunity to support an American company. Thanks West Paw!
Bumper Dog Bed

I wanted to like this bed since my dog likes sleeping in the round and I wanted a bed that I could easily wash. So I would give it 5 stars fro washability, but only 3 stars for the bed itself. I don't like the fact that the green fill, nice and fluffy when it arrived lodges a certain way and doesn't spring back. I've refilled the pillow with my own Poly-fiber fill and will do the same with the bumper in the New Year. For the cost not sure I should have to improve the product to make it as described. Going 'green', which I do when ever I can, isn't necessarily the best solution. This poly fill will last a lot longer than the green stuff used in the pad and bumper, so which is less green in the end?
Just ok, not worth the price

I loved the design of these beds, and I thought my 1 year old English Bulldog would love to curl up in it. He reacted kid of funny to it at first, wanted to eat it and tug with it, but eventually really loved laying upside down on his back with his head hanging off the bumper. He really enjoyed sleeping in it, and it kept the drool off the floor!
After a while though, he lost interest in it and started to bark at it. I think the zipper on the inside pillow opened a bit and caught his belly skin one day, and from then on he wouldn't go near it. Normally, he doesn't just hate something suddenly that he likes unless it hurt him or scared him. We decided to store the bed for a while, and about 6 months later we brought it back out again. Sadly, he sleeps on the carpet literally inches away from the bed. The insides are mangled and lumpy and move around too much when he walks on it. He won't put all four paws on it at once, and certainly will not even sit in it. It's quite high off the ground, and makes him skittish to step on because the fluff inside moves around so much under his feet. I feel like I have to fluff his bed more than I fluff my own pillow! He does consider it every now and then, but never actually steps onto it unless we give him treats. Sadly, this was a huge waste for us.
Worst bed I've ever purchased.

When I was reading about this product it sounded great and I was really excited to be able to pick the colors of my dog's bed so that it would match the rest of our living room. After about a week of having the dog bed I was very disappointed. First off my dog doesn't like it. After forcing my dog to lay in the bed to try it out the cushions are already flat. Also I've washed the covers and the pillows. The pillows don't hold up to being washed without the covers on them. And both of the zippers are already broken. I've purchased dog beds that were only a fraction of the price of this bed and they lasted longer and my dog actually enjoyed them. I rarely review products but I wanted to let anyone know that was considering buying this bed NOT to buy it. Total waste of money. The dog toys are awesome but I will never purchase another pet bed and would advise everyone else to do the same.
